Sen. Susan Collins says special counsel Robert Mueller must be allowed to complete his probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential race and it would be "devastating" if President Donald Trump dropped the ax on him.
"He is a person of great experience and impeccable integrity, whose appointment was praised by both sides of the aisle. It is absolutely essential that he be allowed to finish his work," Collins, a Maine Republican, said in a statement, Maine Public reports.
The statement is similar to those issued by other Senate Republicans who also say Mueller's probe should not be tampered with.
Over the weekend, Trump took to Twitter to brand the probe as a "witch hunt" and mentioned Mueller by name:
