Democrat Jon Ossoff has a 7-point lead over Republican Karen Handel in the race for the open U.S. House of Representatives seat in Georgia, according to SurveyUSA.
The results:
- Ossoff: 51 percent.
- Handel: 44 percent.
- Undecided: 6 percent.
The open seat belonged to Tom Price, who resigned to become President Donald Trump's secretary of Health and Human Services.
Ossoff does not currently live in the House district for which he is running, but voters appeared unconcerned.
- 24 percent say his residence is a major issue.
- 21 percent say it's a minor issue.
- 51 percent say it's not an issue.
- 2 percent are unsure.
"This race is neck-and-neck and my team and I are going to continue working as hard as we ever have, reaching out to every voter and making the case for fresh leadership and accountability in Washington," Ossoff said in a statement, according to WXIA-TV, the Atlanta TV station that sponsored the poll.
A Handel spokesperson dismissed the results of the poll, saying, "Our internal numbers show that this is truly a toss-up," according to WXIA-TV.
Ossoff finished with 48.1 percent of the vote in the April 18 primary, which is not enough to win the seat outright.
The poll was conducted with 700 registered voters from May 16 to May 20. Out of those 700, 549 had already voted or planned to vote in the runoff, according to SurveyUSA.
