Steve Bannon said that special counsel Robert Mueller is "an honorable guy" who shouldn't be fired from his Russia investigation, the former Trump-whisperer told the BBC in an interview.

Further, during the interview with "Newsnight," Bannon says Martin Luther King "would be proud" of President Donald Trump.

"I do not think Mueller should be fired. He's an honorable guy. He's a combat Marine. He's somebody who's served his country," Bannon told BBC's "Newsnight." "I don't agree with everything that's been going on with special counsel but I think he's run it."

Bannon, however, does think that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should be terminated and will be, shortly.

In an audio clip obtained by The Hill of the interview that's to air Wednesday night in the U.K, Bannon says Rosenstein "is going to take the direct order of the President of the United States or I think Rosenstein will be fired."

Bannon also made the case that Trump should not testify before Mueller.

"I do not think that the president should testify. I just don't. I don't think it rises to that level. I think he can answer those questions in writing. I do think he oughta answer the questions," said Bannon, former White House senior adviser and Trump's campaign chairman.

Bannon also asserted that Martin Luther King would be proud of Trump for putting blacks and Hispanics back to work.

"If you look at the policies of Donald Trump, anybody, Martin Luther King would be proud of him," Bannon said. "What he's done for the black and Hispanic community for jobs. Lowest unemployment rate in the black community in recorded history, you don't think MLK would be proud?"

Bannon also dismissed his meet and greets with fascists and members of the alt-right, instead blaming the media for the likes of David Duke and Richard Spencer.

"These guys don't exist unless you (the media) make them a big deal. They're totally irrelevant," Bannon said.

"First of all, they're all cranks. Donald Trump has said that. I've said that. They're all cranks. The only reason they exist is because MSNBC and BBC is down there with a camera, giving them a platform. If you cut them off, there's no way you'll ever hear from them," Bannon said.
