A group of House Republicans was put off by White House chief strategist Steve Bannon earlier this week when he told them voting for the GOP healthcare replacement bill was "not a discussion" and "not a debate," Axios reports.
"You have no choice but to vote for this bill," he reportedly said.
Bannon’s comments came during a meeting with the House Freedom Caucus, a group consisting of conservative Republican members of the House of Representatives that argued the House bill didn’t go far enough.
One Freedom Caucus member replied to Bannon: "You know, the last time someone ordered me to something, I was 18 years old. And it was my daddy. And I didn't listen to him, either," reports Axios.
The American Healthcare Act was pulled from a floor vote Friday because it didn't have enough votes despite a strong push from President Donald Trump and long hours behind the scenes to make changes to the legislation by House Speaker Paul Ryan.
One source told Axios that Ryan "boxed us in," because he started the process before Trump's inauguration. "We didn't have any choice," the person told Axios.
Ryan reportedly kept telling Trump everything would be fine and "they'd bring it together at the end."
