Georgia election official Gabriel Sterling, who has disputed President Donald Trump’s claims of voter fraud in the state, says he is casting his ballot for Republicans Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue in the senate runoffs.
Sterling, who is a Republican, serves as the voting system implementation manager in the state. He made his remarks Tuesday morning in tweet just moments before polls opened.
"I encourage any of you that haven't voted yet here in Georgia, you have between 7am-7pm at your polling location,” he wrote. “And as much as this may disappoint some, please join me in voting for Senators Perdue and Loeffler. A divided government will serve Americans best right now."
Perdue is being challenged by Democrat Jon Ossoff in one runoff, while Loeffler is facing Democrat Raphael Warnock in the other contest. The outcome will decide whether Republicans retain control of the Senate.
Fox News noted Sterling’s tweet came a day after he pushed back at Trump’s claims of voter fraud in the November presidential election.
"There was not massive voter fraud in the presidential election," he said. "There is no shredding of ballots going on. That’s not real. That’s not happening. This office has been open and transparent. We are continuing investigations."
