Stephen King does not use Facebook any more, the best-selling author announced over the weekend in a tweet.
"I'm quitting Facebook," he wrote. "Not comfortable with the flood of false information that's allowed in its political advertising, nor am I confident in its ability to protect its users' privacy. Follow me (and Molly, aka The Thing of Evil) on Twitter, if you like."
Since he made his announcement, King’s Facebook page has been deleted.
There has been increasing criticism of Facebook recently for permitting politicians to have false ads on its platform, according to CNN.
Last month Facebook announced it would not prohibit political ads, including ones in which politicians lie, arguing instead that “people should be able to hear from those who wish to lead them, warts and all, and that what they say should be scrutinized and debated in public.”
In contrast, Twitter announced this past October that it would no longer have political ads, with company CEO Jack Dorsey explaining that "A political message earns reach when people decide to follow an account or retweet. Paying for reach removes that decision, forcing highly optimized and targeted political messages on people. We believe this decision should not be compromised by money."
