Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) blasted President Donald Trump's Tuesday morning tweet that said shutting the government down was needed.
"That's an absurd observation," Hoyer, the House Minority Whip, said Tuesday at a weekly gathering with reporters, according to the Washington Examiner.
"Our country needs a good 'shutdown' in September to fix mess!'" Trump said in a Tuesday morning tweet.
"For President Trump to say shutting down the government is something that's needed … is absurd, incorrect, and very harmful to the stability of the federal government, and to the trust of our allies," Hoyer added.
The minority whip has addressed the possibility of a government shutdown before.
"No one believes the Democrats want to shut down the government — that's irrational," he said Thursday on CNBC.
Back on April 4, Hoyer said that Republican leaders must work with Democrats on a bipartisan deal to prevent it, The Hill reported.
He mentioned his Tuesday comments to reporters in a tweet.
Negotiators in Congress signed a tentative deal Sunday to avert a shutdown through September.
