Michael Steele Considers Run for Maryland Governor

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is considering a run for Maryland governor.

"We're looking at it," Steele said on MSNBC on Monday. Steele said he was "going to take a look at the numbers. Maryland's a tough state; there are a lot of challenges there."

Saying he believes he can move the state in a different direction, Steele noted that Maryland has lost 30,000 employers during the administration of Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley, who has held the office since 2007.

Maryland residents are "taxed to the hilt," Steele said. "Forty new taxes and fees on Marylanders in the last eight years is ridiculous. That's not leadership; that's just gouging."

Steele said he would make his decision by the end of the 2013. He served as lieutenant governor of Maryland from 2003 to 2007 and ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 2006.
