Thursday, 11 November 2010 06:05 PM EST

Support for Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is shrinking quickly among committee members as he contemplates running for a second term. Even some of his closest supporters are urging him to step down, the National Journal reports.

Steele, RNC, chairman, Rove, GillespieBetween 40 and 50 of the 168 RNC members back Steele, while another 40 to 50 definitely will vote for someone else, knowledgeable strategists say. The remaining members are undecided, the observers say.

Meanwhile, a group led by star strategists Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie is searching for a popular candidate who can beat Steele.

Although they haven’t agreed on a challenger yet and likely won’t come up with a consensus choice, strategists who both support and oppose Steele say coalitions are forming now to prevent him from gaining a second term.
