Eliot Spitzer, the former New York governor who has launched an invigorated political campaign five years after stepping down in disgrace, said Sunday voters have offered him forgiveness and encouragement.
Spitzer said his constituents have said he has earned the right to run for New York City comptroller, and that he has owned up to his failure and has "looked the public in the eye…and accepted responsibility."
"I've asked the voters of this city for forgiveness, but I've also said look at the totality of my record, the independence of my voice when it came to Wall Street, when it came to standing up on the environment," Spitzer said on ABC's "This Week."
In 2008, Spitzer was involved in a prostitution scandal that cost him his job.
On the topic of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman late Saturday, Spitzer said justice has failed.
"This is a failure of justice," the former New York attorney general said. "I don't think there's any other way to view it. The judicial system is not perfect, and in this case, it has failed."
