President Donald Trump's wariness of refugees is putting some at risk of death, The Washington Post reports.
According to the newspaper, new security restrictions enacted by the Trump administration, 11 countries are facing suspension from the U.S. refugee program — including those with potentially fatal illnesses being blocked from entering.
Authorities say sick refugees seeking treatment in the U.S. will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
But workers at the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Kenya told The Post that they have seen none — including a 5-year-old girl with kidney cancer — approved since late October.
The State Department said regarding refugee admissions, "the safety and security of the American people is paramount."
"We continue to receive referrals from UNHCR [The UN Relief Agency] for vulnerable cases — for example, urban refugees, single mothers, vulnerable women, and people with medical conditions," a U.S. official told The Post. "Processing times may be slower because of new security vetting procedures."
