Although many Republican senators have publicly called for the White House aide who dismissed Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., as "dying anyway," to apologize, none of the GOP senators who met with President Donald Trump on Tuesday even mentioned the comment, The Hill reports.
"The person who said that should apologize, and should apologize publicly," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said after the lunch meeting, before admitting none of the attendees had actually brought up the comment in the hour-long meeting with the president.
Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., described the lunch as "very cordial."
"Of course there should be an apology," Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Ark., said, adding "we need to be thinking less about senseless comments, and more about prayers for a great American."
