Establishment GOP Upset With Senate Conservatives Fund's Attacks

By    |   Monday, 30 September 2013 02:13 PM EDT

Mainstream Republicans are getting angrier at the Senate Conservatives Fund for taking on the party's own rather than fighting against Democrats.

"It's completely destructive," Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn told Politico. "They are spending most of their money going after Republicans and making it harder for us to nominate and elect Republicans and regain the majority."

The fund, founded in 2010 by former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, is mobilizing against Republican senators who are unwilling to insist that any government spending bill include no money for the Affordable Care Act.

It has launched broadsides against Cornyn in his home state of Texas as well as Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee.

Of the $3.5 million that the SCF has raised since the 2012 election, $1.5 million came in during August alone while it fought Republican senators over Obamacare, Politico reports. That has led many Republicans to complain that the group is looking out for itself more than the party as a whole.

"Isn’t it interesting that every dollar that is spent [attacking] good conservative Republicans ... is a dollar that isn’t spent on winning the majority?" Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma told Politico. "If your strategy is to think that you can get 60 hard-core conservative senators in this country, I don’t think it works."
