The Senate voted Monday to formally condemn white supremacist groups and for President Donald Trump to speak out against them.
The Hill reported the resolution passed unanimously.
The measure was introduced last week by Sens. Mark Warner, D-Va., Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Cory Gardner, R-Colo. It came in response to the violent and deadly riots that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia, last month.
The resolution now heads to the House for voting in that chamber. It formally condemns "the violence and [the] domestic terrorist attack" in Charlottesville that resulted in the death of a 32-year-old woman. It also denotes the Trump administration denounce hate groups and "address the growing prevalence of those hate groups in the United States."
The Charlottesville riots came after white supremacists marching to protest the planned removal of a Robert E. Lee statue clashed with counter-protesters. There have been violent riots in other cites as well.
