Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., called the events leading up to the hearing on President Donald Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court a "banana republic process."

His comments came during a Tuesday morning interview on MSNBC’s "Morning Joe."

Whitehouse is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which began hearings on Tuesday regarding Kavanaugh.

He maintained Democrats are "boiling mad."

"There has been a real banana republic process that has gotten here," he said. Whitehouse was particularly concerned about the number of documents available to Democrats. But Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman, Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa had said earlier on Tuesday there was more than enough documents available for Democrats.

Whitehouse maintained: "Those of us who are lawyers think the obvious comparison is to the discovery process in a trial.

"Imagine one party in a trial telling the other party, well, you're due all this discovery, but we're only giving you 10-15 percent of it. And we're going to make a rule to not talk about that publicly."
