Republicans must come together behind President Donald Trump and his agenda, even if they don't like his tweets, the language he uses, or the political mistakes in his statements, Rep. Sean Duffy said Friday.
"This is the first time probably since Ronald Reagan that I've had a conservative president who embodies my ideas as a conservative," the Wisconsin Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program.
"If you can take the tweets and some of the mistakes he makes, if you can take that away and you look at the policies, this guy is great for conservatism and great for America and great for American jobs."
That means conservatives should support efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare, pass tax reform, reduce business regulations, secure the border and grow the economy, Duffy said.
Republicans control the House and Senate, but have stalled on passing many of Trump's agenda items, and Duffy said that's because they "have to grow a backbone."
"[They] have to be as tough as Donald Trump, and know that the left-wing media's going to attack them," said Duffy. "But in the end, if you pass good bills, you will be re-elected because good policy is good politics."
