Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., announced he will self-quarantine after being told by the Brazilian Embassy that he may have been in contact with a member of President Jair Bolsonaro’s delegation who tested positive for the coronavirus.
“While I do not believe I interacted with the infected person, that individual was in the same room as me,” Scott in quoted in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “After consulting with the Senate’s attending physician and my personal doctor, I have been told that my risk is low, and I don’t need to take a test or quarantine. However, the health and safety of the American people is my focus and I have made the decision to self-quarantine in an abundance of caution.”
He added: “I am feeling healthy and not experiencing any symptoms at this time.”
Scott had met with the Brazilians on Monday in Miami, according to the newspaper. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez also placed himself in quarantine after having been alerted, NBC Miami reported.
Bolsonaro’s Communications Director Fábio Wajngarten tested positive for the virus. Just days before the meeting with Scott, he traveled to Florida to meet President Donald Trump at the Mar-a-Lago resort. A photo he posted shows him standing with the president.
A number of lawmakers, including Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., have also put themselves in self-quarantine after coming into contact with another person who later test positive for the coronavirus.
