Embattled EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt asked an aide to help find a job for his wife with a salary north of $200,000, a former staff member told congressional investigators Monday, The Washington Post reports.

Samantha Dravis, the EPA’s former associate administrator for the Office of Policy, also told investigators that Pruitt asked her to contact the Republican Attorneys General Association to inquire about a job for his wife, Marlyn.

Pruitt headed the group when he was the attorney general of Oklahoma.

Dravis, though, refused to make the call to avoid possible violations of the Hatch Act and any potential conflicts of interest.

Dravis’ attorney, Miller & Chevalier’s Andrew D. Herman, told the Post Dravis answered questions, “as forthrightly and candidly as she could, and she pushed back on both sides when they were either wrong or pushing their agenda.”

“I don’t think she was trying to protect anybody, and I don’t think she was trying to hurt anybody,” Herman said. “She was giving her view of what happened.”

Dravis eventually helped Marlyn Pruitt find a job at the Judicial Crisis Network, but that arrangement ended earlier this year. Pruitt was signed on as a contractor, and her salary was less than six figures, according to the Post.

Dravis, along with Pruitt’s former chief of staff Ryan Jackson, have reportedly done other non-agency work for the EPA chief, including reviewing the administrator’s lease and first class travel.

Pruitt has been fending off allegations of profligate spending and ethical missteps that jeopardize his job, including concerns he gave massive raises to two of his closest aides and he rented a Capitol Hill condo from a lobbyist who represents fossil fuel clients. Pruitt is also under fire for frequent first-class air travel and for purchasing costly items for his office, including a $43,000 soundproof telephone booth.
