New Jersey Republican Rep. Scott Garrett reportedly said that the reason he has not paid his dues to the fundraising arm in the House is because it backed gay candidates.
According to
Politico, Garrett was challenged for his lack of payment to the National Republican Congressional Committee during a closed-door meeting of the House Financial Services Committee led by Texas Republican Rep. Jeb Hensarling, who chairs that committee.
Sources told Politico that Garrett's first response to the question was that it was a matter of conscience, but then he reportedly shocked the room when he said that in the past he didn't support the NRCC because it works to recruit gay candidates and has supported such candidates during primary elections.
Lawmakers present at the meeting reportedly grew angry over Garrett's response, saying that the NRCC doesn't support primary candidates and that it doesn't discriminate against candidates because of their sexual orientation.
Garrett has bucked party leadership in the past, voting against House Speaker John Boehner remaining at his post.
