Rep. Adam Schiff took aim at President Donald Trump over claims from the president that a spy was embedded in his campaign for political purposes.
"This isn't 'Spygate,' but it is a form of 'Liegate,' these repeated false statements by the president. Whenever you hear that preface - 'people are saying,' or 'we've been told' - the American people should know by now that what follows is going to be another false statement," Schiff, D-Calif., said Thursday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
The congressman was referring to a tweet from Trump on Wednesday.
"The president said that there was wiretapping at Trump Tower. That was false. He said there was an unmasking conspiracy. That was false. He said that there (were) political spies embedded in his campaign. That is false," Schiff said.
Two Thursday briefings from intelligence officials to top lawmakers about the use of a confidential informant are not appropriate, Schiff said in the interview, referring to one meeting with Reps. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and Trey Gowdy, R-SC, and the other with the "Gang of Eight" leadership members.
