President Barack Obama has a 52 to 43 percent lead over Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney among all Americans, and a 51 to 45 percent lead among registered voters. The results in the new
Washington Post-ABC News poll represent the first time the president has broken the 50 percent mark among registered voters.
In a matchup with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Obama leads by 15 points overall and by 11 percent among registered voters.
The president has also drawn even with Romney on the issue of job creation and holds leads on handling foreign policy, fighting terrorism and better protecting the middle class. On the issue of who understands the economic problems people are facing, 52 percent believe Obama does compared to just 37 percent for Romney.
In the race for the GOP presidential nomination, Romney has the support of 39 percent of Republicans or Republican-leaning independents, compared with 23 percent for Gingrich, 16 percent for Rick Santorum and 15 percent for Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas,
the Post-ABC poll shows.
Romney’s numbers are the best in a Post poll since last summer and are a sign that the Republican Party’s more moderate wing is coalescing behind him. However, Romney still lags behind with those who describe themselves as very conservative and evangelical Christians, the Post reported.
The poll surveyed 1,000 adults Wednesday to Saturday and has a margin of errors of plus or minus four points.
