Sanders, Warren and Others Urge Barr to Step Down Over Stone 'Interference'

By    |   Friday, 14 February 2020 03:03 PM EST

Nine senators, including Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., have signed a letter calling on Attorney General William Barr to resign over his “interference” in the sentencing of Roger Stone, Raw Story reports.

The senators wrote the letter to Barr “to express our alarm about and opposition to the unethical political intervention” in Stone’s case, in which the department changed the sentencing recommendation made by the team of federal attorneys prosecuting the former adviser to President Donald Trump, “who was convicted of obstructing a congressional investigation, lying to Congress, and tampering with a witness in connection with the investigation of Russian intervention into the 2016 presidential election.”

They add, “The interference in this case by you or other senior DOJ officials working under you is a clear violation of your duty to defend fair, impartial, and equal justice for all Americans. As a result, we call on you to resign immediately.”

The senators note that the four prosecutors assigned to the case, who all withdrew after the change, recommended a sentence of seven to nine years in prison. They also note that press reports state that Barr’s office made the decision to change the recommendation, and that Trump congratulated the attorney general on Twitter after it was announced.

“This is an extraordinary turn of events. It appears to show that you and other top DOJ officials intervened in a clearly political fashion to undermine the administration of justice at the President’s behest in order to protect a well-connected political ally,” they write, “and it reveals your unwillingness or inability to maintain the integrity of the DOJ and to uphold justice and the rule of law.”

The letter was signed by Sens. Sanders, Warren, Ed Markey, D-Mass., Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., Patty Murray, D-Wash., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii.
