The Trump administration is finally moving ahead with a sweeping set of sanctions on Russia — after a missed Oct. 1 deadline and weeks of delay, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said Thursday.

Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in a statement, said the State Department will identify entities in Russian intelligence and defense sectors that will be targeted by the sanctions — an identification that had been expected by an Oct. 1 deadline.

The Trump administration's sanctions move "is a good first step in responsibly implementing a very complex piece of legislation, and I appreciate Secretary [of State Rex] Tillerson's attention to this important issue," Corker said in his statement. "Congress will expect thorough and timely consultation until full implementation is complete."

Corker had vowed Wednesday to get answers on the sanctions — promising "I'm going to get on the phone with someone," The Hill reported.

He spoke with Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan about the issue Thursday, Politico reported.

A State Department spokesperson said the guidance would be available "shortly."
