President-elect Donald Trump will be "better informed" on Russian hacking after he's briefed by the intelligence community, House Speaker Paul Ryan told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Wednesday.
"Hopefully, he'll get up to speed on what has been happening and what Russia has or has not done," Ryan reiterated.
Trump, who has for months rejected the assessment of the U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia meddled in the presidential election with the aim of helping him win, is scheduled to meet leaders of the intelligence community on Friday, the first time he had shown any willingness to potentially accept their consensus.
Ryan has found himself in the middle of a conflict between lawmakers who want Congress to conduct an investigation of Russia's hacking and Trump's dismissal of the intelligence assessments. The speaker stressed to Politico that he "rejects any politicization" of intelligence matters.
Ryan also expressed skepticism on relying on the word of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to counter the intelligence assessments, as Trump has done, with the speaker telling Hewitt that Assange is "a sycophant for Russia [who] leaks, steals data and compromises national security."
Regarding the start of the new Congress, Ryan said "We are mapping out [a 200-day plan], working with our friends in the Senate and the Trump transition team, our January through August strategy to go big and to go bold and to implement our agenda that we all ran on and all agree upon."
He stressed that the American people are hungry for reforms and it is the job of a GOP-controlled Congress to deliver.
