Pennsylvania Rep. Ryan Costello is expected to not seek re-election in November, according to news reports Saturday.
Costello filed petitions on Tuesday for a third run, but "four Republican sources" told the City&State Pennsylvania website that Costello told state and local party officials recently that he would quit the race before the May primary.
"The sources all spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing the sensitive nature of the meeting," the site disclosed.
So far, 35 Republicans have announced that they are not seeking re-election in November, while three said they would not return to the Senate.
According to news reports, Costello has apparently been considering not seeking re-election for several weeks.
City&State reported that observers have speculated that Costello would drop out since the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the Republican Party's challenge to Pennsylvania's new congressional districts.
Costello represents the Sixth District, which encompasses Philadelphia's suburbs, and the site reports that observers say the district has been redrawn to favor Democrats more positively.
He urged that the state Supreme Court justices involved in the redistricting case be impeached — and this month's Republican loss in the western Pennsylvania special election for Senate, won by Democrat Conor Lamb, is also figuring in Costello's decision, the site reported.
State and county Republican officials — as well as Vincent Galko, Costello’s campaign spokesman — did not return requests seeking comment, City&State reported.
