Sixty-eight percent of Americans support tougher sanctions against Russia, while 21 percent do not, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll reveals.
Here is how the survey breaks down:
- 68 percent of Republicans back tougher sanctions against Russia, while 19 percent oppose them
- 74 percent of Democrats support stronger penalties, compared to 18 percent who do not
- 68 percent of independents back tougher sanctions, while 22 percent oppose them
- 52 percent of all those polled say President Donald Trump should invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the White House in an effort to improve relations, while 42 percent are against it.
- 49 percent say Trump has done "too little" to criticize Russia for allegedly violating international law, 38 percent say he’s handled the issue "about right" and 4 percent say he has criticized Russia "too much."
The survey was conducted April 8-11, right after Syria’s suspected chemical attack, but before Trump launched retaliatory air strikes. The poll sampled 1,002 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
