Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., commended Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and said he will not campaign against him in the November election, Politico reports.
"I don't campaign against Bill Nelson," Rubio said Tuesday. "Bill Nelson and I have a very good working relationship."
His comments came as Florida's Republican Gov. Rick Scott is believed to be readying a bid for Nelson's Senate seat
Scott's office has been teasing a "major announcement" set for April 9 amid speculation he will run for the Senate.
Although Rubio insisted he will "support the Republican nominee," he noted that with Nelson he could not "have a better partner."
"I don't work as close with him (Scott) because he's a state official, and I'm a federal official," Rubio said.
But Politico described the relationship between Rubio and Scott as "icy."
When Rubio dropped out of the 2016 presidential race and decided to run for re-election, Scott was one of the last Republicans to endorse him, Politico noted. And Scott's top consultants hit Rubio during the Senate primary, the website added.
Meanwhile, the working relationship between Rubio and Nelson continues to grow, Politico noted. The two co-sponsored gun legislation after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Dough High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead.
"I hope we can continue to work together on commonsense solutions, such as requiring universal background checks and getting assault rifles off our streets," Nelson said in a joint statement.
