Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., supports making Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Rubio made his comments in a Friday tweet. He referred to plans by Sen. John Cornyn to introduce legislation to make June 19 as a federal holiday.
Rubio wrote: “I strongly support @JohnCornyn effort to make #JuneteenthDay a federal holiday. The end of slavery was one of the most meaningful & significant events in the history of our republic & 19 June is the most appropriate day to commemorate it.”
Cornyn, speaking on the Senate floor on Thursday said Juneteenth is “an opportunity to reflect on our history, the mistakes we have made, but yet how far we've come in the fight for equality, and a reminder of just how far we still have to go,"
The date currently is commemorated in Texas and 46 other states as well as the District of Columbia.
