Sen. Marco Rubio is spending $200,000 on a single ad for Arkansas Senate hopeful Tom Cotton in a signal he intends to play a significant role in trying to win back the chamber for Republicans in 2014.
The ad, paid for by Rubio's political action committee, looks set to match what Cotton's campaign already has spent on its own ads,
reports The Wall Street Journal. It highlights the rookie congressman's military background and says he will "fight big spenders in both parties to end Washington's crony capitalism and to stop the reckless spending," according to the Journal.
The ad will run statewide starting Thursday.
"The guiding principle of this PAC is to find four or five conservative Senate candidates and to aggressively support them in their races," Terry Sullivan, director of Rubio's PAC,
Reclaim America, told the Journal. "Tom Cotton is the first of them."
The 36-year-old congressman has already established momentum in his bid to unseat two-term Sen. Mark Pryor, recently named
the most endangered Senate Democrat in 2014.
CNN added the Harvard graduate and Iraq and Afghanistan Army veteran to its "40 Under 40, Ones to Watch" list.
Polls put Pryor and Cotton
neck and neck, but problems with Obamacare are seen as
eroding Pryor's support.
Pryor's campaign has already hit back at the ad saying, "Cotton's service is admirable, but suggesting that he'll do anything but continue to promote crony capitalism in Washington is laughable."
Reclaim America has spent more than $300,000 this year on boosting GOP senators and candidates, a figure higher than most Senate leadership PACs have raised this year. The organization also plans to raise and bundle contributions for the Cotton campaign, the Journal reports.
