The son of Ronald Reagan took a swipe at President Donald Trump’s supporters on Thursday, proclaiming they would sooner support Vladimir Putin for U.S. president than a Democrat.
“No previous president could have gotten away with even a tenth of the things that Donald Trump has,” Ron Reagan, a veteran liberal commentator, said on MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews.”
“But the reason is his base, which I think is about a third of the electorate or so, they really aren’t in touch with reality and the most important thing to them is I think he seems to hate the same people that they hate …”
“If it was left just up to Trump’s base, they would elect [Russian president] Vladimir Putin as president of the United States over virtually anybody with a D after their name … Trump seems to love Putin and they’ll love Putin, too.”
Trump has been under fire from Democrats and Republicans for appearing to agree with Putin over U.S. intelligence on the question of whether Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential race – a comment he later said was a misspeak.
