Republican Sen. Ron Johnson sent a letter to the Justice Department asking for more clarity about the delay in the FBI's investigation of emails found on Anthony Weiner's laptop before the 2016 election, Fox News reports.
Johnson, Senate Homeland Security Committee chairman, sent the letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Thursday about the timeline, Fox reports.
"The cryptic and disjointed nature of the text messages, in addition to heavy redactions applied to other FBI documents, make it difficult to understand fully the sequence of events," Johnson wrote to Rosenstein, Fox reported.
Johnson gave Rosenstein a deadline of March 15 to provide information to the committee, Fox reports.
It's unclear what relevance Johnson hopes to glean from Rosenstein, given that it happened 17 months ago, and two of the principles involved, FBI Director James Comey and former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe are long gone.
Further, the DOJ Inspector General's report on the sordid affair and actions of McCabe are due out in the coming weeks.
However, Johnson remains steadfast in his endeavor to draw conclusions from the long-surfaced text messages between rogue FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page to the timing of the investigation of Weiner's laptop, Fox reports.
