Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing for his state to host the Republican National Convention – despite concerns over the coronavirus outbreak.
“The shape of the epidemic is just simply going to be different,” DeSantis, a Republican, said Thursday during an interview on television’s “Fox & Friends.” “Hopefully, it’s a lot better, but I think we’ll be able to make those decisions about what precautions need to be taken as you get closer.
“But to just rule out a convention at this stage, I think, is a mistake,” “So we’ve said we want to get to ‘yes’ on it, and I think you’ll be able to do it.”
President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the GOP convention, due to be held in North Carolina in August, will have to be moved to another state because of social distancing restrictions ordered by the state's governor, who is a Democrat.
In a tweet, Trump said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper "is still in Shelter-In-Place Mode, and not allowing us to occupy the arena as originally anticipated and promised.”
And DeSantis noted: “We understand that there’s a virus. What can we do to be able to have activity in a way that’s safe? To just say no to everything, I don’t think is going to work. So we want to be able to do it, and I think we could do it in a safe way.”
