Many Republicans Want Romney to Step It Up

Wednesday, 24 August 2011 09:27 AM EDT

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney isn’t inspiring passion in his party with his low-key campaign, many Republicans say. And many of them are urging the former Massachusetts governor to pack a bigger punch, The Hill reports.

"Maybe it will work, but I've never thought you win the presidency by being cautious," veteran GOP strategist Mark McKinnon told the news service. "Given all the challenges we face today, people want bold leadership more than ever. Playing prevent defense may keep the opponents from scoring much, but it doesn't do much to excite the crowd."

Romney’s defensive strategy created the opening for Texas Gov. Rick Perry to enter the race, many observers say.

In South Carolina, Rep. Joe Wilson counts himself a Romney admirer. “But he's really made, sadly, a limited effort” in the Palmetto state, Wilson says. "He really has been absent."
