Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, won't receive an invite to next month's CPAC event because he sided with Democrats for a vote in the ongoing impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union, tweeted Friday evening that Romney's decision to vote in favor of having witnesses in Trump's trial — a measure that ultimately was denied, 51-49 — squashed any chance of him attending the Feb. 26-29 conference in National Harbor, Maryland.
"BREAKING: The 'extreme conservative' and Junior Senator from the great state of Utah, @SenatorRomney is formally NOT invited to #CPAC2020," Schlapp wrote on Twitter.
The tweet was accompanied by a graphic that includes a photo of Romney, the CPAC logo, and the words "Not invited: Mitt Romney."
Romney and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, were the only two Republicans to vote in favor of having witnesses testify at Trump's trial Friday afternoon. Two other members of the party who were on the fence — Sens. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — voted against it.
Trump was impeached in the House on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress charges last month. The trial has lasted nearly two weeks and may conclude in the middle of next week — perhaps on Wednesday, the day after Trump delivers the State of the Union address — with an acquittal.
