Robert Kennedy Jr., a noted skeptic of vaccine safety, said Tuesday that President-elect Donald Trump has asked him to chair a commission to investigate the issue.

"He asked me to chair a commission on vaccine safety and scientific integrity . . . I said I would," Kennedy told reporters in the lobby of Trump Tower following the meeting, which Kennedy said Trump had requested.

"President-elect Trump has some doubts about the current vaccine policies and he has questions about it," The Hill reported Kennedy as saying. "His opinion doesn't matter, but the science does matter and we ought to be reading the science and we ought to be debating the science."

Kennedy, the son of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, has been one of the leading voices in the movement warning of what he says are the danger of vaccines.

Kennedy has been among those claiming that preservatives in vaccines are linked to the rise in autism cases, though researchers and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say there is no such link.

Trump himself has expressed concern about vaccine safety. At least one voter told NBC News during the primary season she backed Trump partly because of his stance on vaccines.
