Iowa GOP Heavyweights: Perry Support Sliding

By    |   Friday, 30 September 2011 02:11 PM EDT

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry already has seen his standing drop in national polls, and now it’s happening in Iowa too. Top Iowa Republicans say support for the Texas governor is shrinking in their state, The Hill reports.

A new American Research Group poll of likely caucus voters shows Perry with 14 percent support, putting him in third place behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney with 21 percent and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., with 15 percent.

“When Perry came in, a lot of people were leaning [toward] Perry or at least looking at him very hard,” said Bob Vander Plaats, who heads the socially conservative organization Family Leader.
“[Perry] comes in as the front-runner, starts getting vetted, goes through the debates and people start hesitating about him.”
