Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., said Wednesday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions shouldn't be subject to repeated attacks from President Donald Trump.

"He deserves better than this," Shelby said on CNN. "He is not the president's personal lawyer, he is the attorney general of the United States."

Shelby previous defended Sessions in a series of tweets highlighting their long relationship in the Senate.

Co-host Poppy Harlow brought up Trump's latest tweet about Sessions, which the senator described as "way out of bounds" on the president's part.

"I think Jeff Sessions deserves better than he's getting," Shelby said, "and I do believe that he has a lot of friends, he has a lot of respect around the country. He's a man of integrity, and that's a job for integrity."
