Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal on Thursday said the one thing that would spur Republicans to act on gun violence is if "they are faced with mass losses" in November's midterms.
Blumenthal, D-Conn., made the comment on CNN's "New Day" morning program in the aftermath of a mass shooting that killed 17 at a high school in Parkland, Florida.
"I think Republicans will act, if they are faced with mass losses in these elections," Blumenthal said on CNN. "What can be done? In a word, elections."
Blumenthal seemed to suggest that gun control needs to be a single-topic issue for Democratic voters in the midterms.
"The advocates for gun violence prevention … need to make this issue front and center, a priority in these upcoming elections," Blumenthal said.
"There are glimmers of hope and we need to make this issue a groundswell, grassroots issue that really moves America," Blumenthal said.
