Republicans Brush off Fundraising Tallies by Red-State Democrats

By    |   Tuesday, 16 April 2013 12:54 PM EDT

Republican leaders are discounting the impact of successful fundraising efforts by red-state Democrats who could be vulnerable next year in the 2014 midterm elections.

According to Politico, several Democratic senators in states won last year by Republican presidential Mitt Romney did well during the first quarter this year, posting significant donations to their campaign accounts by Monday's quarterly deadline for campaign finance reports.

Among the top Democratic incumbent fundraisers were Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu, who reportedly racked up $1.2 million from January through March and has nearly $3.5 million on hand.

Arkansas Sen. Mark Pryor, did pretty well himself, raising $1.9 million. He has $3.4 million on hand.

National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Brad Dayspring told Politico that Republican aren't worried by the high figures.

"It’s extremely early in the cycle, many Democratic candidates don’t yet have challengers, and are picking low hanging fruit by bringing in their biggest named backers for events," he said when asked about the successful fundraising so far.

He also noted that sometimes the money just doesn't matter, citing former Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln's expensive loss in 2010 to John Boozman.
