The House Republicans who cast a vote to impeach former President Donald Trump over the Capitol riot face a backlash from members of their party back home, causing some to launch primary challenges, CNN reports.
"It started out big and it's still growing. People are angry," said the GOP chairman in the Wyoming county of Sheridan, Bryan Miller, who plans to run against House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney in the party's 2022 primary. "She's not living up to what we in Wyoming wanted, across the board. And it's a huge betrayal."
Another Wyoming politician, state senator Anthony Bouchard, said he’s running against Cheney as well after being “flooded” with messages encouraging him to challenge her.
"I believe that her impeachment vote revealed who she has allegiance to, and I don't think the voters will forget it any time soon," Bouchard said.
Washington Reps. Dan Newhouse and Jaime Herrera Beutler were both named by the state’s Republican Central Committee in a resolution condemning the impeachment to express disappointment in their votes in favor of it.
Former Rep. Joe Walsh, R-Ill., who challenged Trump in the 2020 Republican primary, noted that "each and every one of those 10, when they made that vote, they knew in their heads and in their hearts it was probably a political death sentence. They knew that.”
He added that any money they manage to raise will be “dwarfed” by the funding that their opponents receive.
"I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of them not even run again, depending on how their districts shake out" once redistricting takes place, Walsh said.
