If Republicans pass an immigration plan that includes a pathway to citizenship, the party is "quite likely" to lose both the House and the Senate," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Thursday.
"Mark my words, if Republican majorities in Congress pass citizenship for millions of people, and amnesty, I think it is quite likely we will lose both houses of Congress," Cruz said Thursday on "Fox & Friends."
The Senate is set to vote on immigration bills Thursday, and President Donald Trump has said that he favors a path to citizenship for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.
"The plans that are before the Senate right now, I think they don’t make any sense at all. We should not be granting citizenship to people here illegally. For whatever reason, you’ve got a whole lot of Republicans eager to propose granting citizenship for 1.8 million people here illegally," Cruz said in the interview.
The senator said that President Barack Obama did not grant citizenship when he first created the DACA program.
"DACA was just a work permit… why would Republicans be galloping to the left of Barack Obama?" Cruz said on "Fox & Friends."
Cruz was the only senator to vote against a measure that would have advanced the immigration debate to the Senate floor Monday. https://www.newsmax.com/politics/senate-votes-open-debate-daca/2018/02/12/id/842961/
