GOP Officials Talk Convention Plans in Tampa

Tuesday, 06 December 2011 07:38 PM EST

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus is promising a "smooth, state-of-the-art, exciting" convention in Tampa next summer.

Priebus and other national GOP officials were in town Tuesday to give the media a glimpse of plans for the Aug. 27-30 event, which will culminate in the party nominating its presidential candidate.

Officials played down security and weather concerns during a presentation at the St. Pete Times Forum that drew more than 450 media members. The convention will happen in the middle of Atlantic hurricane season when the daytime high temperatures hover in the 90s.

As many as 10,000 protesters could show up, but officials expressed confidence in the security plan coordinated by the U.S. Secret Service.

Around 50,000 people are expected to come to town, including 15,000 media.
