Republican efforts to gain control of the Senate after the November elections have hit a major snag, with some likely GOP victories now in jeopardy.
Democrats currently hold a 53-47 majority in the chamber, but Nebraska is now the only state where a Republican (Deb Fischer) is clearly favored to win a Democratic seat,
The Wall Street Journal reports.
Political analysts had predicted that Indiana would be an easy win for the GOP. But the race between Republican tea party favorite Richard Mourdock and Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly is now considered a tossup.
“We have to win Indiana to get to 51 seats,” longtime GOP strategist Scott Reed told The Journal. “I would have liked it if the Indiana race is in the safe category. It is not.”
In Maine, the race to replace retiring GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe is also considered a tossup, while in Missouri the once-vulnerable seat held by Democrat Claire McCaskill is now considered “likely Democratic,” according to The Journal, as she squares off against controversial GOP hopeful Todd Akin.
