President Donald Trump is working hard to ensure that the Republican National Convention outdoes the Democratic National Convention that's being held virtually this week, CNN reports.
CNN notes that Trump has made numerous phone calls to aides from both Air Force One and the White House residence "at all hours" to share his ideas about possible venues or "gimmicks" and to demand progress reports on his desired speakers, in the hopes that this will help his performance in polls.
The Republican Naitonal Committee has struggled to secure a venue due to the coronavirus pandemic. Initially, it was to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, until the state's coronavirus policies prompted the GOP to move the convention first to Florida, and, later to various locations in Washington, D.C., including the White House itself. Most of the convention will take place in Washington, though Trump does want to travel to Charlotte at some point next week.
CNN also reports that early drafts of Trump's speech accepting the GOP nomination mirror his previous speeches "that delved heavily in the divisive culture wars that Trump has aggressively stoked," in both in 2016 acceptance speech and in his recent July 4 address at Mount Rushmore.
"I think probably the biggest thing is the untold stories that will be told next week," White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said onboard Air Force One last Tuesday, following Trump's trip to Arizona. "I think that will be the biggest surprises."
