Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., said President Donald Trump's tweet on Saturday about lies his national security adviser Michael Flynn said regarding conversations he had with Russian officials was proof of obstruction of justice, The Hill reported Saturday.
"THIS IS OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE. @POTUS now admits he KNEW Michael Flynn lied to the FBI. Yet Trump tried to influence or stop the FBI investigation on Flynn," Lieu said in a tweet.
Saturday morning Trump tweeted Flynn's admission of lying to the FBI was proof there was "nothing to hide" about claims of collusion with Russian officials during his 2016 presidential campaign.
Officials of former President Barack Obama were also quick to claim Trump was guilty of obstruction of justice after his tweet.
"Oh my god, he just admitted to obstruction of justice. If Trump knew Flynn lied to the FBI when he asked Comey to let it go, then there is your case," tweeted Matthew Miller, former Justice Department official under Obama.
Dan Pfeiffer, former Obama senior advisor, also commented, tweeting "If Trump keeps admitting to obstructing justice, Ty Cobb might be right that the Mueller investigation may wrap up sooner than we think."
Flynn admitted lying to the FBI about conversations he had with Russian officials after Trump was elected president but before he took office. Trump fired Flynn for lying to Vice President Mike Pence about those conversations.
But, according to former FBI Director James Comey, the president told him in February while he was still head of the agency, "I hope you can let this go," referring to Flynn, according to a memo he wrote at the time, The New York Times reported in May.
