The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee dismissed President Donald Trump's strikes in Syria as proof that he's independent of Russia, saying an investigation is the only avenue to vet that, the Washington Examiner reported.
"Regardless of what the administration claims about its relationship with Russia, the only way to understand the true scope and ties between the Trump White House and the Kremlin is an independent, 9/11-style commission," said New York Rep. Eliot Engel.
Much has been made by Republicans that Trump's willingness to anger Russia by sending strikes to Syria proves he's no pal of Vladimir Putin's.
"For a lot of people, it will probably put to rest all this discussion about, oh, he and Putin are holding hands together," said Senate Intelligence Committee member James Risch, R-Idaho.
"If there was anything that Syria did, it was to validate the fact that there is no Russia tie," Eric Trump said.
"If the president and his administration have nothing to hide, then they should drop their opposition to such an inquiry, release his tax returns, and stop trying to use the recent military action as a defense," Engel said.
