House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to strengthen Democrats' "very poor hand" on impeachment by refusing to release articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate, Rep. Doug Collins said Monday.
"I think she is trying to build a case to try to strengthen a very poor hand she has in the House," the Georgia Republican, who House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said should be among three party members chosen by the White House to represent Trump in a Senate trial, commented on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "She's also trying to give 31 Democrats in Trump districts a little bit of cover."
However, by "taking those very articles and holding them out like a political tool," Pelosi has made it clear that the president's impeachment is partisan, said Collins.
"She has made it exactly what we have seen all along, a political sham job," he added. "Her hypocrisy in this one is so overwhelming it should knock people down. When you look at it this way, she's now trying to have everything her way. That's not the way it works, Madam Speaker."
Meanwhile, on the matter of being a House manager, Collins said he and others have shown the ability to "blow up the case" the Democrats are pushing.
"They've got an election they are trying to influence," said Collins. "That's next year's election and they don't care how they are doing it."
Collins also said that he thinks the impeachment push will end up helping Republican Sens. Cory Gardner, Susan Collins, and Thom Tillis in their tough races for re-election next year, as there is "nothing here" with the Democrats' impeachment push.
