Americans are warming up to religious liberty rights, according to the results of a new poll.

Key findings in the Public Religion Research Institute survey:

  • 46 percent said business owners in the wedding services industry should have the right to refuse service to someone based on their religious beliefs. That is an increase from 41 percent in 2017.
  • 73 percent of Republicans feel the same way, up from 67 percent in 2017.
  • Democrats are mostly opposed to the practice, with just 27 percent saying business owners in the wedding industry should be allowed to refuse service based on their religion. That is up from 24 percent in 2017.
  • Support among Catholics for this type of policy surged from 29 percent in 2017 to 38 percent this year.

The Supreme Court sided with a Colorado baker in a June ruling surrounding religious liberty. That baker was sued for refusing to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple in 2012.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced last week the creation of a task force that will continue the federal government's effort of researching the practice of religious liberty through outreach programs and writing strategies.
