Republican National Chairman Reince Priebus was "in tears" after the release of a 2005 videotape showing Donald Trump using sexually aggressive language to describe his behavior toward women, according to Wisconsin radio veteran Charlie Sykes.

In remarks to the Washington Post posted Wednesday, the conservative commentator described how the frayed relationship between Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan reached a breaking point Oct. 7, when the Post released the videotape the day before a scheduled joint appearance.

"Reince and I were texting back and forth that night," Sykes said. "He said, 'I am in tears over this.' I said, 'Reince, you are not going to allow Trump to come here and drop this turd bomb on every Republican in Wisconsin, are you?' This video came out and the next day we'd have this photo op from hell?"

After the videotape was released, Ryan announced Trump would no longer be attending the event with him.

"Things had been building up emotionally, Ryan's frustration and disgust with Donald Trump, and that was really the decisive break," Sykes told the Post. "That was Paul Ryan serving the divorce papers."
