Rep. Grijalva Announces Cancer Diagnosis

By    |   Tuesday, 02 April 2024 04:56 PM EDT

Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., on Tuesday revealed that he has begun treatment following a recent cancer diagnosis, CNN reports.

Grijalva, who has been in office for more than two decades, announced in a statement that he had sought treatment several weeks ago for a persistent cough and was initially diagnosed with pneumonia, but was later diagnosed with cancer after more tests were conducted. He did not specify in his statement what type of cancer he has been diagnosed with.

“This diagnosis has been difficult to process, but I am confident in the vigorous course of treatment that my medical team has developed, and I’ve begun my journey to fight this cancer,” Grijalva said.

“I am in regular communication with my staff and I continue to work as I undergo treatment,” the congressman continued, adding that his offices will stay open and that services for constituents will not be interrupted.

He went on to ask for privacy and to thank his friends, family, and doctors for their support.

“I am working hard to get healthy and return to business as usual as soon as I am able,” Grijalva said. “I appreciate your consideration, well wishes and respect for my family’s privacy during this time. My heart goes out to others struggling with cancer, and I wish everyone strength in their fight.”

Rep. Nanette Barragán, D-Calif., who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus of which Grijalva is a member, said in a statement, “The CHC will support Raúl and his Congressional staff throughout his fight with cancer, and we know he will bring his trademark toughness and determination to his battle against this disease.”
